What I Am Reading These Days!

«Aquello que nos resta»

Six short stories by Liliana Pedroza (Chihuahua, 1976). This book was winner of Mexico’s 2009 National “Julio Torri” Short Story Prize for Young Writers (Premio Nacional de Cuento Joven Julio Torri 2009).

I am a third-year Ph.D. Candidate in Anthropology at the University of British Columbia, Canada, where I am also a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholar and a Liu Institute Scholar. My doctoral dissertation focuses on trans politics and sex work in Mexico, specifically looking at transgender women’s most recent efforts to obtain legal, health, labour, and social rights.

As a social anthropologist my areas of specialization include feminist theories, gender and sexuality, social movements, labour/work, globalization and neoliberalism, international development, social justice, human rights, Canada, and Mexico. More broadly, I am interested in the fields of historical ethnography, applied and legal anthropology, racism and anti-racism, migration and transnationalism, HIV, global health politics, and Latin America. As a book lover, my reading interests also include Latin American novels, poetry, and literary essays, as well as any well-written work of fiction from other regions.
